Abstract

In October 2024, the Inclusive Infrastructure Design Lab (IIDL) of the University of Southern California, an interdisciplinary research facility between the School of Architecture, The School of Cinematic Arts, and the Viterbi School of Engineering, participated in the Pacific Standard Time event of the Getty Foundation.

The IIDL is a joint project of three schools at USC, led by Professors Alexander Robinson (School of Architecture), Mitul Luhar (Viterbi School of Engineering), and Andreas Kratky (School of Cinematic Arts), which investigates strategies to enable inclusive and sustainable design strategies for large scale infrastructure projects. Like the LA-River, many infrastructure design projects are stalled and costly due to the involvement of many different stakeholder groups. Our design strategies are focused on building tools and methodologies to build a data-informed discourse between those stakeholder groups that yields solutions that are solidly informed by environmental and engineering data as well as carried by wide-spread consensus between stakeholder groups.

The IIDL partnered with several artists, such as Rosten Woo, and local community organizations, such as Clockshop, to participate in "Pacific Standard Time 2024" to host exhibitions, focus groups and walking tours around the LA-River under the title "What Water Wants."

Pacific Standard Time is an annual festival of the Getty Foundation. Under the title PST ART: Art & Science Collide, it creates opportunities for civic dialogue around some of the most urgent problems of our time by exploring past and present connections between art and science in a series of exhibitions, public programs, and other resources. Project topics range from climate change and environmental justice to the future of artificial intelligence and alternative medicine.
