Abstract

Vivacissimo (2023) was commissioned by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Earthpulse Society for a series of performances at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, curated by Hing Chao and Jeffrey Shaw. The work is written for solo cello and a digital (virtual reality) cello ensemble, with live-cued video, dancers, and lighting design, as part of the Lingnan Martial Arts Elite Training Programme (MAETP) administered by the Institute of Chinese Martial Studies, and funded by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Dance Company. The MAETP "represents the first systematic attempt to develop a scientific movement programme for Chinese Martial Arts (“CMA”) of the Lingnan tradition...that can be adapted to performing arts education and training in Hong Kong. The programme will offer a new type of training with a potentially transformative impact on performing arts education in Hong Kong." (ICMS). This virtuosic multi-disciplinary work, presented to arts and culture stakeholders in Hong Kong, synthesises modern dance, martial arts, classical music performance, and technology, and is a reference project for further activities in this domain by both the PI and affiliated organisations.
