Abstract

Over the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in international migration flow from Southeast Asia to East Asia. Vietnam has been one of the major migrant-sending countries contributing to this population flow. This article documents how Vietnamese migrant women using East Asian countries‘ migration programmes as means to obtain different migrant statuses. Analyses of data collected between 2017 and 2022 shows two gendered mechanisms underlying two different patterns of international migrations in the region, namely: cross-border marriages between Vietnamese women and South Korean men, as well as Vietnamese women working in care-giving and food processing industries. This article explores the factors contributing to Vietnamese migrant women‘s decisions in going aboard through marriage migration and labour migration. We also examine Vietnamese migrant women‘s migration experiences while staying in South Korea and Japan. We further demonstrate how migrant women‘s migration outcomes are shaped by their power and status at home in Vietnam, their relationships with their South Korean marriage partners and their Japanese workplace supervisors.
