Abstract
Francis Yu's work examine the dual role of artist and teacher. A video of Yu preparing for class is juxtaposed with an oil painting featuring a "lesson" of painting Chinese characters. Unlike the traditional calligrapher, Yu's rendering is idiosyncratic, turning the characters into personal symbols and strokes. Echoing each other, Yu's video and painting scrutinise the complex mental process of a teaching artist.
