Abstract
Drawing on the social cognition theory, this study examined the link between transformational leadership and employees’ proactive behavior by focusing on the mediating role of role breadth self-efficacy (RBSE) and the moderating role of employees’ future orientation. Based on a sample of 258 supervisor-subordinate dyads employed in two oil and gas companies in China, we found that: (1) transformational leadership was positively related to proactive behavior; (2) employees’ future orientation was positively related to proactive behavior; (3) RBSE mediated the effect of transformational leadership and future orientation on proactive behavior; (4) employees’ future orientation strengthened the direct effect of transformational leadership on RBSE; (5) RBSE mediated the interactive effect of transformational leadership and future orientation on proactive behavior. We discussed the implications of these findings for theories and research, as well as for management practice.
