Abstract

Most mental disorders begin in earlier life, and often run a chronic and relapsing course. From a life course perspective, a person’s constitutional predisposition, life experience, and environmental stresses contribute to the development of mental disorder. The trajectories of mental disorders in late life is further complicated by increasing physical morbidities, neurodegeneration, and changes in psychosocial environment. This chapter focuses on three most impactful mental disorders in the community, including depression, anxiety, and psychosis, across lifespan. The disease course over time and approaches that underlie management of mental symptoms are discussed.
