    Abstract

This paper attempts to investigate the current practices of training and development among the foreign enterprises in the PRC, which will enable an understanding of the pertinent issues and problems and provide recommendations for further improvement. The shortage of skilled labour remains a serious problem for foreign companies in the PRC. More resources and efforts need to be devoted to training and retaining trained employees. The results of this study show that a considerable number of companies are committed to training and development in the PRC. The key issue for the enterprises to consider is how to retain the trained employees so as to ensure the long-term effectiveness of the organisational performance.
