Abstract

The temporal pattern of activities undertaken by top managers has attracted much research attention recently. Top management team (TMT) polychronicity, the extent to which TMT members engage in multiple activities or tasks simultaneously, has been posited to influence strategic decision makings which in turn influence the performance of a firm. However, the specific direction of the influence of polychronicity remains inconclusive. In this paper, we argue that the relationship between TMT polychronicity and firm performance should not be linear. Specifically, TMTs with a moderate level of polychronicity will perform better than TMTs with very low or very high levels of polychronicity. Moreover, we introduce the tertius iungens orientation (TIO) of chief executive officers (CEOs) as the first-order moderator that may shift up the proposed inverted U-shaped relationship between TMT polychronicity and firm performance. In addition, we introduce industry growth as the second-order moderator that may enhance the moderating effect of CEO TIO. The results based on a survey sample of the TMTs of 141 Chinese new ventures support our arguments.
