Abstract
This catalogue documents Gyung Jin Shin’s solo exhibition, The Unmined, held at Current Plans, Hong Kong, from 13 October to 11 November 2025. The exhibition examines the "datafied world," focusing on the quantification and extraction of human emotions and digital labour through data mining and machine learning.
The project comprises three primary works: the wallpaper installation Mined Minds, which visualizes social media data; the sculpture series The Unmined, which integrates coltan crystal structures with sentiment scores; and the video projection Pit, which draws parallels between historical colonialism and contemporary data extraction. Through these works, the artist addresses the hidden labor and materiality within techno-capitalist infrastructures and discusses the concept of "machine-less" media art.
The publication includes a critical essay by Dr. Linda Chiu-han Lai, titled “‘Datafied World’: Beyond the Social Dystopic-Utopic Split View Through Art,” and the artist’s statement, “Notes on the Unmined.”
