Abstract

Cantonese phonology is valuable study among the Chinese languages because it at once preserves many properties inherited from Middle Chinese, and the discernible effects from its contact with English. This article outlines the phonetic and tonal system, syllable structure, phonotactics, and patterns of alternation that covers also key morphophonological phenomena. It serves as a one-stop updated description of Cantonese phonological research that has filled many volumes over the decades.
