Abstract
Drawing on the trait activation theory, the present study examined the effect of prosocial motivation, and its interactional effect with job autonomy on employee’s taking charge behaviors. We collected data from 185 subordinates and their direct supervisors. The results showed that prosocial motivation was positively related to taking charge. Job autonomy strengthened the positive effect of prosocial motivation on taking charge. In addition, job autonomy moderated the indirect effect of prosocial motivation on job performance. These results suggest that job autonomy can activate the expression of prosocial motivation of employees by engaging in taking charge behaviors, leading to higher level of job performance.
