Abstract

This paper is divided into two parts. Part One gives a sourcetext/translated text comparison that focuses on how Wei Yi and Lin Shu deal with the religious material in their joint translation of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Part Two examines the implications of the findings in Part One in the theoretical context of discourse and ideology, using the notions of 'orientalism' and 'occidentalism' as working concepts.
