Abstract

This chapter briefly explains the structure of sports in Hong Kong. It examines the Special Administrative Region (SAR) government’s determined efforts to cultivate a mainstream sports culture in Hong Kong using three approaches: pouring investment and other resources into developing sports in Hong Kong, hosting and staging local and international sporting events, and cultivating the celebrity effect by celebrating sporting achievements. The major challenges of land scarcity and the lack of sporting facilities are also discussed as hurdles to the development and promotion of sports in Hong Kong. The fund was designed to support sports-related scientific research, medicine, and equipment, including the athletes’ gear and facilities in the Scientific Conditioning Centre and the Sports Medicine Centre of the Hong Kong Sports Institute, a training centre for elite athletes. In addition to enhancing sporting facilities and cultivating a sports-for-all culture, the SAR government is committed to a second approach: hosting and staging local and international sporting events.
