Abstract

Extensive comparison of efficient dynamical LEED calculations with new, more complete experimental data has shown the clean state of the W(001) surface as compressed by about 11% such that the top layer spacing is reduced by 0. 18 plus or minus 0. 03 A. This is a greater contraction than had originally been proposed and is more in line with the magnitude of contraction observed in other bcc (001) surfaces.
