Abstract
Echoes and Reflections of Landscape
Since the Sui and Tang dynasties, landscape painting (Shanshui hua) has developed into an independent genre in Chinese art. Over a millennium of development, the motifs such as mountains, peaks, clouds, waters and so on depicted by successive masters have transcended mere representation of nature to become spiritual dwellings for the literati tradition. In Chinese art, Shanshui embody both the inheritance of technique and the continuity of philosophical contemplation. The ink art exhibition of "Story of Chinese Ink in the Mountain Town" begins with the topic of Shanshui, aiming to continue this millennium-old cultural lineage. At the same time, it transforms this university, surrounded by lush mountains and azure seas, into a creative platform for engaging with tradition.
This exhibition features a total of twenty artists, with the unique distinction that most are not professionally trained in art, instead hailing from diverse academic backgrounds spanning disciplines of science and engineering, humanities and social sciences. Yet, their works demonstrate remarkable artistic sensibility through varied expressions. By infusing personal experiences and aesthetic perspectives into landscape creation, each artist has developed an individual ink vocabulary. From evoking the poetic essence of traditional landscapes to capturing the vitality of lendscape sketches along with bold experimental innovations, these creative expressions are rooted in multiple cultural perspectives while mapping our contemporary consciousness. This very diversity embodies the Chinese cultural ideal of "harmony in diversity" (he er bu tong).
Ink art has always been a journey of practice accumulated with time. Mastering its fundamental techniques and developing a personal artistic vision demand years of disciplined refinement. Creation of landscape is not merely about image-making; it constructs an ideal universe within the artist's mind.
