Stakeholder-Dialogic Approach on Green Performance: Big Data Sentiment Analysis of FTSE Top 100 Firms’ Climate Action

Research output: Chapter in book/report/conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This paper examines how green human resource management practices in FTSE100 firms can impact employee behavior and media perceptions through the lens of stakeholder-dialogic engagement. Using a “text as data” approach, we analyzed over half a million articles related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 (climate action) from 2013 to 2022, conducting sentiment analysis and word cloud generation to assess corporate sustainability efforts. We also analyzed discursive text extracted from sustainability reports to distinguish genuine efforts from greenwashing. Theoretically informed by a stakeholder-dialogic approach, our results indicate that when international firms are proactive, authentic, and transparent in engaging with stakeholders and collaborating with their employees on climate action initiatives, it can lead to improved reputational outcomes. This approach also encourages positive citizenship behavior among both employees and the media.
