N2 - We discuss the spontaneous emission spectrum from a V-type atom in a photonic band gap material. We find that the destructive interference could result in a dark line in the spectrum while the constructive interference could result in the merger of two propagating modes. The energy of the localized field (or propagating field) could be enhanced or reduced by the quantum interference. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
