AU - George, Cherian
N1 - Funding Information: Every year, May 3 marks World Press Freedom Day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as an occasion to celebrate the role of independent media in, and to draw public attention to the threats that journalists work under. Since 2016, an Academic Conference on the Safety of Journalists has been organised during the main UNESCO celebration, acknowledging how scholarly research can generate knowledge about this complex issue, and thus contribute to safer working conditions for practitioners of journalism. The 2017 Academic Conference, organised by Hong Kong Baptist University alongside the main World Press Freedom Day event in Jakarta, Indonesia, brought together more than 20 speakers from five continents. They presented research on threats to journalists? safety that are coming from multiple directions?states, big business and even civil society. This Special Issue features articles by several of the participants, starting with the keynote speech by Agnes Callamard, the United Nations? special rapporteur on extrajudicial extrajudicial summary or arbitrary executions and a longtime champion of freedom of expression. The collection includes perspectives on journalist safety in varied Asian contexts such as China, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Reflecting the global nature of the problem, we have also included perspectives from Europe and Latin America. Together, these contributions demonstrate the value of bringing multiple methods and disciplinary lenses to bear on a complex and pressing media issue.
