Abstract

Speaking Brushes is an open access, educational database that explores the lives and careers of deaf artists working in Europe in the period 1550-1700. The website is one of the outcomes of the ECS project HKBU 22607320 “The colours of Silence: untold stories of deaf and mute painters in Early Modern Europe”. It includes research on art and disability and presents the careers of twelve artists. A biographical profile for each is artist is provided alongside visual analyses of their most representative works. While the database includes current academic research, the information is presented to also engage and inform the public and audiences outside academia.
