Abstract
The term "reunion under the exquisite candles" (chongfeng huazhu) means to light the wedding candles again, referring to the second wedding of the same couple to celebrate their sixtieth anniversary in pre-modern China. This article features the chongfeng huazhu celebration of Wu Qizuo (1830-1911) and his wife née Zhou (1828-1915) in late Qing Panyu, Guangdong province. It makes use of various publications of the Wu family, and particularly the Nanshan jiahua (Fine Talks of the South Mountains), a commemorative volume that contains over three hundred congratulatory messages, in the study and reconstruction of the occasion to shed light on a previously under-discussed dimension of the marriage customs in traditional China.
