Abstract
Vikram Seth was born in Kolkata on June 20, 1952, to Prem Seth, a Bata Shoes executive, and Leila Seth, India's first female State High Court Chief Justice. He was educated at two schools in India: the private, 1858-founded Roman Catholic St. Michael's School in Patna, Bihar, and The Doon School in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, where he enrolled later. He was the Editor-in-Chief of The Doon School Weekly, the flagship student publication of the institution established in 1936, just 1 year after the English-modeled boarding school launched. Seth then completed his Advanced Levels at the Tonbridge School, instituted in 1556, in Kent, England, before completing a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, in 1975. In 1978, Seth earned a Master's degree in Economics from Stanford University in California, where he also aimed to complete an Economics PhD. On exchange from Stanford, he relocated to Nanjing University in Jiangsu, China, from 1980 to 1982, where his interests in Chinese classical poetry added Mandarin to his impressive list of language competencies, which includes Welsh, German, French, English, Urdu, and Hindi.
