N2 - Amid the substantial increase in the role that the service sector plays in the economy of many countries, it is imperative to prepare graduates to provide service with care, and the ethical behavior that is a critical component of service. Institutions of higher learning have been instrumental in developing curriculum that is responsive to societal needs. In the case of service leadership, the Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership and Management suggested that the Hong Kong tertiary institutions consider developing curriculum that will be responsive to the needs of the service industry and at the same time enhance leadership capabilities of the student-learners. In response to this suggestion, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) initiated this project by designing General Education (GE) courses that addressed service leadership in a variety of disciplines and environments. In the last 4 years, HKBU has developed ten courses as part of the requirements in its General Education programme. Assessment of the effectiveness of the offerings shows that the students are valuing their exposure to the philosophy of service leadership, have developed the valued characteristics of effective leaders, including empathy, openness in mind, being creative, socially responsible and reflective citizens.
