Abstract
We investigate the absorption/dispersion properties of an ensemble of coherently driven three-level atoms in a modified reservoir such as the photonic band gap structure. We found that the index of refraction with vanishing absorption can be enhanced more than in the normal vacuum reservoir. Furthermore, the driving field which maintains the atomic coherence, suffers from order of magnitude less absorption.
