Research On Cantonese Final Particle ⌈啫⌋

Abstract

The available information shows that final particle ⌈'Greek Text'(tsϵ55)⌋ generally appeared in the early 19th century, from the postposition phenomenon, co-occurrence phenomenon, using frequency, historical source, confirmed that its original character is finite adverb ⌈'Greek Text'⌋. ⌈'Greek Text'⌋ always use as modal particle in the pre-Qin period, and obtained the function of finite adverb in Six Dynasties, which has the basis of reanalysis as final modal particle. After displacement, the sentence end position catalyzes adverb ⌈'Greek Text'⌋ to become particle ⌈'Greek Text'(tsϵ55)⌋, from the content domain to the epistemic modality, and becomes more and more subjective. With the deepening of language application degree, the semantics directed less and less strongly towards a fixed component and finally it overlapped with the natural focus of the information contained in whole sentence.
