Abstract

This paper describes a simple algorithm for relief shading using digital elevation models. The algorithm is based on Lambert's cosine law which is used widely for solid modeling in computer graphics. To meet the needs of various geographical applications, the program also takes into account daily and seasonal change of sun position. The potential application to remote-sensing image processing also is illustrated using the result from this program.
