Psychometric Validation of a Culturally Specific Dementia Stigma Instrument for Chinese Populations

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to validate the psychometric properties of the simplified Chinese version of the Dementia Diagnosis Attitude Scale (DDAS) among the Chinese population. Method: A total of 600 participants from China completed the study. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to examine the factor structure. Convergent and discriminant validity, concurrent validity, and known-group comparisons were assessed. Reliability was measured using internal consistency. Results: The CFA found the two-factor model demonstrated satisfactory model fit. The simplified Chinese version of the DDAS showed significant correlations with two theoretically related constructs: social distance and perceived stigma. Known-group validity was confirmed by significant score differences across socio-demographic subgroups. Excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α=0.94) demonstrates good reliability. Discussion: The findings support the validity and reliability of the simplified Chinese version of the DDAS in the Chinese population, with strong cultural relevance.
