Abstract

This article addresses issues of fictionality, metaphor, gender, the self, and the text-image interplay in portraiture practice and reassesses the boundaries of portraiture. It examines two moments in courtesan portraits in imperial China: their debut in the Tang dynasty (618-907) and their seventeenth-century apex during the Ming-Qing transition. It focuses on two literary representations, an individual courtesan’s self-portrait and her male-authored cross-dressed portrait.
