Abstract

This is the first book to contribute to the knowledge of popular music and music education and to present scholarly research on the development of, and challenges to, the introduction of cultural politics and popular music into Chinese music education. Based on the perspectives of school music teachers and students in the three cities of Beijing, Changsha, and Shanghai, the findings of the empirical studies address in great detail, with in-depth analyses, the development of popular music education as a producer and reproducer of cultural politics in the music curriculum within a political and socio-cultural context in China.
