"Our students are illogical!": exploring students' misuse of logical connectors at Hong Kong tertiary level

Abstract

Academic writing almost inevitably involves the presentation of arguments and arguments more often than not involve the use of linkers that are intended to logically connect ideas to establish a point of view. This roundtable discussion will center on the issue of logic and the use of logical connectors in argumentative essay of Hong Kong students at tertiary level.

The particular topics that the discussion will focus on include 1) the importance of logical connectors in the presentation of logic; 2) the relationship between logic, logical connectors and quality of argumentative writing; 2) misuse of logical connectors among Hong Kong university students; 3) types of misuse; 4) pedagogical implication of qualitative analysis of (mis)use of logical connectors in learner texts.
