Abstract

It is well-known that noise degrades phase synchronization of periodic oscillators by inducing phase slips. Here we study constructive effects of noise on phase synchronization in coupled chaotic oscillators. We find that in the weak coupling regime below the synchronization threshold, noise can enhance phase synchronization significantly. This counterintuitive and constructive effect of noise is demonstrated in coupled Rossler chaotic oscillators with various measures of phase synchronization.
