Abstract
"Metamorphosis: Art Amidst Change" is a group exhibition that aims to delve into the profound ways in which artists can employ transformation, experimentation, and creativity as powerful tools for addressing the complex challenges of the “polycrisis”. In an era of multiple crises—environmental, social, political, and technological—artists have the unique ability to inspire change, provoke dialogue, and offer alternative perspectives. This exhibition will showcase diverse works from a group of talented artists who explore the transformative potential of art in response to issues that relate to the idea of change.
The term "polycrisis" refers to a multifaceted or interconnected set of crises that occur simultaneously or in close succession. It recognizes that the world today is facing a complex and interwoven web of challenges that span various domains such as environmental, social, political, economic, and technological. The concept of the polycrisis acknowledges that these crises are not isolated but rather interconnected and mutually reinforcing. For example, environmental issues such as climate change can exacerbate social inequalities and political instabilities, while technological advancements can disrupt traditional economic systems and social structures. The polycrisis framework recognizes the need to address these crises holistically and understand their interdependencies.
Amidst change, artists and designers employ various strategies to navigate the uncertainties and challenges it presents. Some artists may draw from introspection and introspective practices, using art as a means of self-reflection and personal growth. Others may emphasize collaboration and community engagement, fostering empowerment, connections and collective responses to change. The exhibition will showcase a range of artistic strategies that highlight the resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness of artists in the face of change.
The NEXUS Gallery is located at the 12th Floor of the iACADEMY NEXUS Campus at 7434 Yakal St in, Makati City and is curated by artist Jon Cuyson, who serves as Dean of the School of Design and the Arts.
