Abstract
This research project explores illustration as a transformative pedagogical tool for older adults (aged 60+) in Hong Kong, framed within Creative Ageing. It addresses five core objectives:
1. Identification and analysis of suitable illustration pedagogical practices locally and internationally through literature reviews, focus groups, and interviews with elderly participants, student helpers, social workers, and the PI’s reflective notes.
2. Development of a pilot model via a 12-page toolkit designed as a practical workshop facilitation resource.
3. Examination of benefits to social and mental well-being through pre- and post-workshop focus group interviews.
4. Promotion of illustration in Creative Ageing contexts, emphasising drawing as a tool for memory recall, storytelling, reflection, and connecting past with present.
5. Shifting public perception of illustration from aesthetic/skills-based practice to a visual language for dialogical, interdisciplinary teaching and learning.
Key activities in this reporting period included two rounds of six-week thematic workshops (April 2025 & April 2026) in collaboration with Caritas Hong Kong’s Project House @1QRW and One Bite Social. Eight senior participants (aged 65+) from the Central and Western District engaged in storytelling and illustration. A community museum-style work-in-progress showcase exhibited their contributions. A 12-page toolkit (guidelines, images, outcomes, and dialogue excerpts) was produced and distributed.
For the ECS Educational Plan, internationally, interviews were conducted with 5 illustration educators/researchers from Singapore, South Korea, Pakistan, Indonesia, and India. This led to the formation of the Research Illustration Collective (RICE) platform (launch 2026-end) and a 6,000-word manuscript for Bloomsbury Publishing on Handbook of Drawing Research, chapter titled (tbc) “Illustration as a Research Method in Pedagogy Development in Asia” .
