    Abstract

This study sheds lights on the role of empowering leadership in proactive behavior by examining how and when empowering leaders exerts effects on followers. The data show that LMX and followers' harmonious passion mediate the positive relationship between empowering leadership and positive behavior. From the contingency perspective of leadership, we also test how empowering leadership can enhance its effect on LMX and harmonious passion when followers' need for autonomy is high. Based on a sample in China, we obtain empirical data supporting our hypotheses. We conclude with a discussion on the implications of these findings for academic research and managerial practice.
