Abstract

Technology significantly enhances the impact of game-based learning by making educational experiences more interactive, engaging, and adaptable to diverse learners. Digital tools and advanced technologies increase motivation, creativity, and learning outcomes, especially when thoughtfully integrated into game design. This project explores how technological features may be used to enhance the effectiveness of game-based learning in an undergraduate financial literacy course.

First, QR codes were used in “Diversification: The Card Game” to give players access to an extensive pool of financial literacy questions that improves the game’s replayability. Second, I designed a virtual board game called “Risk & Reward” where up to 8 players compete by making investment decisions, aiming to be the first to reach the target net worth. Finally, students played “FinEd Farm” and other interactive augmented reality (AR) experiences which utilize projector touchscreen technology at the Investor and Financial Education Council (IFEC) FinEd Hub.

Qualitative feedback from students highlighted how the games facilitated understanding financial concepts, collaborating and working in teams, developing and revising strategies, and engaging in hands-on learning. Specifically, students noted how the QR code game mechanic in “Diversification” enhanced engagement and interactivity and reinforced financial knowledge. Students who played the “Risk & Reward” virtual board game mentioned having fun playing the game and making financial decisions under constantly-changing market conditions which were simulated using technology. Finally, students who visited the “IFEC FinEd Hub” and played the interactive games appreciated how technology made learning financial concepts more tangible, accessible, and memorable. Overall, the project demonstrates that technology, when creatively implemented in game-based learning, can transform abstract financial concepts into engaging, hands-on experiences. The overwhelmingly positive student feedback underscores how these technological integrations not only boost motivation and collaboration but also create memorable, practical pathways to financial literacy.
