Abstract

This chapter is a micro-study of local, genre-specific Canadian record label Distribution Ambiances Magnétiques Etcetera. It examines the glocalization of free improvised music practices through the Musique actuelle movement that emerged in the province of Québec, Canada in the 1980s. Musique actuelle is an idiosyncratic avant-garde music practice that represents a syncretism between elements of free jazz, electroacoustic music, Québec chanson and various forms of popular music. The chapter takes as its case study the micro-independent record label and distribution company, Distribution Ambiances Magnétiques Etcetera (DAME), through which to examine two seemingly contrasting and competing directions inherent to Musique actuelle.
