Abstract

A biopic is a celebrity-‐driven story, but the way of high-‐concept storytelling often promulgates a biased understanding of a celebrity. If Jane Austen is the godmother of chick lit, in Becoming Jane, she has now become a chick flick heroine with a double love of male supremacy and feminist independence. Her writings intertwine with her personal story, taking psychological realism to a new level. Leaving these issues aside, this film answers Janeites’ wish to know more about Austen (celebrity intimatization), to appreciate Austen’s talents and success (meritocratic celebrification), to perpetuate the Austen myth and the release of more Austen-‐related products in the market (celebrity commodification).
