    Abstract

Flood is a common natural disaster in many developing countries like Bangladesh. Almost every year this country faces disastrous flood events which affect not only the lives and livelihood of low-lying vulnerable communities but also different infrastructures. In particular, major recent floods in 2017 and 2019 had negative impacts on critical roads and a huge population in coastal Bangladesh. In this chapter, we review the major impacts of flooding in Bangladesh and a few case studies from other developing countries. We also use geospatial techniques to identify affected road systems and populations in Bangladesh. Based on our findings, it is expected that relevant institutions on flood risk management will take necessary actions to mitigate the negative impacts of flooding in Bangladesh and beyond.
