Abstract
Drawing upon social exchange theory, this study examined a unique exchange-based mechanism, namely, employee's feeling trusted, that underlies the relationship between participative decision making (PDM) and voice behaviour. Based on beyond-expectation foci, I further proposed and tested the moderating role of power distance. Time-lagged data collected from 152 supervisor-subordinate dyad in a media organization supported the indirect effect of PDM on promotive voice, and partially supported the indirect influence on prohibitive voice. I also found that the indirect influence of PDM on voice behavior via feeling trusted was contingent on employee's individual power distance value, such that a two-stage moderated mediation model on prohibitive voice was supported. Specially, the indirect relationship between PDM and prohibitive voice through feeling trusted was positive and significant only for those high power distance employees. Notably, those supported predictions were still significant when controlling for psychological safety and psychological empowerment as alternative mediators.
