Abstract

The human relations/human resources (HR) perspective concerns primarily the process of utilizing employee abilities and talents and improving work efficiency in achieving desired organizational and individual outcomes. This entry describes the historic evolution of the HR perspective and its dominant influence on organizational communication research prior to the 1990s. The key areas of HR‐guided research include transmission based communication processes, communication evaluation, communication climate, organizational culture, organizational socialization, performance feedback, supervisor–subordinate interaction, leadership communication, and group communication and decision making. Directions for future development of HR based functionalist communication theories and research are discussed.
