Abstract
Post-work commuting has a significant yet often overlooked impact on work-life balance. Previous studies have largely ignored the impact of commuting on the family domain of working individuals, thereby neglecting the commuting resources and opportunities that could potentially alleviate work-family conflict in a positive way. Drawing on the work-family boundary theory and conservation of resources theory, we collected a two-wave daily quantitative survey from 216 married commuters. The research identifies the positive effects of two types of post-work commuting activities: leisure crafting in commuting enhances work detachment, thereby reducing levels of work-family conflict, while family-role reattachment plays a crucial moderating role. By employing a positive psychology perspective, this study fills a gap in existing research on the impact of post-work commuting on the family domain, advances cross-domain empirical studies on work-family balance, and offers new practical insights for addressing work-family conflict.
