Abstract

Agenda setting research examines how news media coverage prescribes issue and attribute salience in shaping public opinion. Hence, this longitudinal study analyzed bidirectional relationships of agendas in online discourse regarding Donald Trump’s transition of power in the White House using 42,352,749 tweets from the news media, journalists, and the public. Granger causality tests revealed that journalists were key agenda setters. Notably, their tweets were driven by the topic’s salience within the public agenda and fear.
