Abstract
Ethical leadership has received considerable scholarly attentions in the last decade. However, a complete account of how ethical leaders convey their ethical message is seemingly missing in the literature. Applying the Four Flows Theory (McPhee & Zaug, 2000) as an overarching theoretical underpinning, we propose an integrative framework to elucidate the flows of communication embedded in the process of ethical leadership. We contend that the proposed four communication flows essentially serve as conduits that allow different levels of ethical leaders to direct their attentions to the multilevel flows of messages in conveying the ethical principles. These efforts could result in internal ethical climate within the organization as well as external ethical reputation of the firm in the industry. This study concurrently complements the previous literature of business ethics, ethical leadership, and organizational communication.
