Abstract
Strategic consensus has been found to significantly facilitate economic performance of established organizations. Yet, it remains much less clear whether strategic consensus is of equally positive value to high- tech ventures where the paradox between strategic flexibility and consistency tends to be more salient. Drawing on a sample of 92 high-tech ventures from China with a lagged multiple respondents design, this study examines the mechanism through which strategic consensus among founding top management team (TMT) members impacts product innovation, a performance indicator of high importance for high- tech entrepreneurial firms. Specifically, we propose and find support for the mediating role of team decision speed and the moderating effect of structural specialization among team members in the relationship between TMT strategic consensus and the ventures’ lagged product innovation. Contributing to both consensus and entrepreneurship literature, this research helps to unpack the consequences of strategic consensus in an entrepreneurial setting.
