Abstract

The rapid advancement of the internet technology has made webcasting a common practice in Hong Kong. Many entertainment and non-commercial sites have become multimedia portals and are providing audio and video clips for convenient consumption. In fact, Hong Kong is one of the leading communication centers in Asia. As an international city, Hong Kong’s population was 6.9 million by the end of 2004 while the household number was around 2.3 million. Hong Kong’s population is mainly composed of Chinese, and foreigners are only 7.7% of the total. The development of webcasting in Hong Kong is closely related to the city’s vibrant media industry. Although Hong Kong is geographically small, 52 daily newspapers, a number of electronic newspapers, and 864 periodicals are published. By 2004, virtually all households and commercial buildings were covered by the broadband network. The number of broadband accounts increased significantly over the years.
