    Abstract

As an Asian cosmopolitan city, Hong Kong has a higher education system that is highly internationalized and is well-recognized for its international standing and reputation. In recent years, the city has been developing Hong Kong’s higher education system into an education hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Against this background, this chapter discusses the recent development and challenges of the higher education sector in Hong Kong. After providing an overview of the current higher education system in Hong Kong, this chapter analyzes recent structural changes to the higher education sector as a result of marketization and diversification strategies, the impact of dramatic expansion of the higher education sector, and the ongoing movement to internationalize higher education in Hong Kong. This chapter also investigates the impact of such changes on social inequality and mobility, as well as university governance in higher education.
