Abstract

This study uses surveys to compare how Chinese and U.S. patients with irritable bowel disease (IBD) gained and processed health information using social media. The results show that IBD patients (N = 838) who processed health information on social media thoroughly and productively gained more emotional, informational, and peer support. They showed a better understanding of IBD treatment and improved symptom management. Cultural backgrounds are important in gaining informational and emotional support from health information.
