Abstract
Gego/Altolar is a collection of modular pieces inspired by the work of Venezuelan artist Gego and the Altolar building in Caracas, where she lived and worked. Gego's explorations with abstraction, geometry, kinetic sculptures and installation have inspired me to design, develop, and produce my own sound sculptures by modifying, altering and reimagining traditional musical instruments and to create custom-built sound installations. In the compositional cycle Gego/Altolar, I seek to blur the boundaries of physical space (auditorium, concert hall), performance space (stage) and sound installation (collection of sound sculptures) by creating large-scale environments (collection of installations) that are inhabited by both musicians performing the installations and members of the audience experiencing the sound in space-time.
Gego/Altolar I: Tres Planos for 2 guitarists is the first installation of the cycle. It was composed using a sound object specifically designed for this project. The work was commissioned by Duo Zictra (Ivan Adriano & Ricardo Cuadrod). It was premiered in Buenos Aires on 31 October, 2025.
