Abstract

This study investigates the coverage of China and Sino-African engagements in the highly polarised Nigerian media-sphere. Evidence from a quantitative content analysis and a thematic analysis of four randomly selected Nigerian newspapers (Guardian, THISDAY, Leadership, and Punch) from September 2018 to September 2020, reveals, on a pragmatic level, the inadequacies of China’s soft power strategies in Africa as its projected stance of mutualism and partnership is counteracted by its perceived practices of exploitation and economic sabotage.
