Abstract

Top management team (TMT) diversity research has revealed the complementary role of TMT members with different background in facilitating organizational outcomes including firm innovation. Among different forms of diversity, gender diversity, or more specifically, female representation in TMT has drawn a lot of scholarly attention yet its effect on firm innovation remains inconsistent, calling for further investigation of the contingencies influencing this linkage. Drawing on the literature of CEO-TMT interface and that of self-efficacy, this study posits the CEO self-efficacy as the first level contextual variable and industry growth the second- level contextual variable in influencing the relationship between female representation in TMT and firm innovation. Empirical examination based on data collected from 304 entrepreneurial firms in China supported the hypothesized moderations. Implications of this study were discussed.
