Abstract

AI-generated disinformation spreads rapidly, influencing political cynicism, which undermines political trust and affects electoral perceptions and voting behaviors. This study reveals that exposure to AI-generated disinformation heightens perceived prevalence and negative emotions, both of which mediate political cynicism. Increased cynicism correlates with reduced political trust and a higher likelihood of rejecting election results or voting for third-party candidates. The findings highlight the significant impact of AI-driven content on democratic engagement.
